Join me Shannon Noble, for a very special exploration of Jura wine when Rare Wine Dinners hosts with wine writer Wink Lorch. Wink is regarded as one of the world’s most knowledgeable authorities on all things Jura. Her book, Jura Wine, has been shortlisted in the Andre Simon Food and Drink Book Awards 2014 and the Louis Roederer International Wine Writers Awards 2014.
The dinner will take us on a journey through this beautiful and unique place located between Burgundy and Switzerland in the Franche-Comté region of France. Rare Wine Dinners has assembled an eclectic selection of both current and back vintage Jura wines encompassing the many styles that make this region so unique. Under Wink’s expert guidance we will explore 14 different Jura wines, hearing first hand from Wink the real stories behind the wines and wine making people of this very special region in France.
For those who have not heard, Jura wines are making waves in the restaurant scene due to their style complementing food so well. The wines have become very difficult to obtain as production is minuscule and top sommeliers snap them up quicker than the importers can get them to Australia. The task of matching these wines to food has been given to the Studio Neon team of Aaron Teece and Richard Robinson. We think their style and philosophy of foraging and using organic Australian produce suit the wild nature of the Jura wines.
The evening will start with a Crémant du Jura from Frédéric Lambert. Following the Sparkling we make our way to the first of the reds. Yes Reds! In the Jura they do things a little differently. The Reds are lighter styled and savory and it is customary to serve these before the whites so when in Rome…. We will taste such reds as the 2012 Les Dolomies, who is fast becoming a cult producer with their wines turning up on the wine list of Noma in Copenhagen. Then after the reds we taste the topped up style of whites with two Les Dolomies wines, a Chardonnay and a Savagnin. These wines are somewhat Burgundian in style, yet uniquely Jurassian.
The style of whites then heads into oxidative territory! With their high acidity, savory and nutty, salinity characteristics, they make for perfect matches to all sorts of food dishes. First up, a treat from 1993 from Daniel Dugois, then a Chardonnay from Frédéric Lambert. We will also taste the wines that make Jura so famous – Vin Jaune. We have treasures from the very rare and top vintage of 1942 thru to 1996. Translated ‘Yellow Wine’ the wines age a minimum 6 years in old barrels under a veil of yeast similar to sherry, which is where it helps promote all of the unique flavors of Vin Jaune.
And finally we have a straw wine for you to taste, from Hughes Béguet. A desert wine made from raisined grapes from the red grape Ploussard and the white grape Savagnin which is the Vin de Paille way of the Jura.
THIS MAY BE YOUR ONLY CHANCE TO MEET WINK IN AUSTRALIA AND GET YOUR JURA BOOK SIGNED BY HER! COME JOIN US AND DISCOVER THE RARE WINES OF THIS REGION.
