Perth Rare Wine Dinner 2013

Perth Rare Wine Dinner 2013

Relive the night

Relive the night

Join me for a very special look at some rare European wines when Rare Wine Dinners hosts its first dinner in Perth Western Australia.  This dinner will take us on a journey through some superb examples of German Riesling, Italian Barolo, French Champagne, Burgundy and Bordeaux.

The evening will start with two excellent vintage Champagnes from the house of Veuve Clicquot released under the Rare label which was disgorged in November 2005 after 17 years of cellaring at the Veuve Clicquot Maison.  Following the Champagne we make our first stop just down the road from Champagne in Burgundy with a rare 1969 Cuvee Lupin Meursault and then a Domaine Ramonet Batard – Montrachet from the great 2000 vintage. Then we compare and contrast 2 vintages of Spatlese Riesling from one of the most prestigious estates in Germany, Schloss Johanissberg including the exceptional 1971 vintage. Following this we step up a level on the German Riesling sweetness scale and taste an incredibly rare 50yr old premium Feine Auslese Riesling from the famed Mosel Saar Ruwer region and the house of Karthaus along side the glorious 1964 Joh Jos Prum Gold Kapsel Wehlener Zeltinger Sonnuhr.

Leaving the white wines behind we head across to Burgundy with two of the greatest vintages of last century, 1964 Les Marconnet and 1949 Musigny both bottles in superb condition. Jumping across to Italy we find ourselves sampling two Barolo from the greatest vintage of last century 1971 including Enrico Serafino a wine made in the traditional Italian style. Leaving Italy we return to France and the region of Bordeaux to taste the fabulous and rare 1953 Chateau Petrus (without doubt a wine tasting highlight for anyone who attends this dinner) along with 1964 Chateau Leoville Las Cases in rare Magnum format ensuring a larger glass to sit on and ponder.

With the majority of the wines now behind us we move to Vouvray and sample one Loire’s greatest producers and their expression of vintage 1959 for Chenin Blanc in the late picked style. We then return to Germany for an absurdly good sweet Riesling from a 10 out of 10 vintage. A very rare 1964 Edelbeerenauslese which is sure to raise the bar again for a very fitting finale to a night of incredible wine rarity and experience!
